SmartLab vs. Makerspace: What's the Difference for a School?
Schools shopping for a hands-on STEM space usually run into two very different options with confusingly similar photos: commercial turnkey lab programs — sold under brand names such as SmartLab — and the do-it-yourself school makerspace. Both put students in front of building materials and technology. The difference is in who designs the space, who writes the curriculum, and where the money goes.
What a turnkey lab program is
A turnkey lab is a product. A vendor typically supplies some bundle of furniture, equipment, structured curriculum units, learning-management software, and teacher training as a package, and the school buys or licenses the whole system. The appeal is obvious: a school with no maker-experienced staff can open a functioning lab on a schedule, with lessons already mapped to grade levels and a company on the phone when something breaks. The trade-offs are equally structural. The school is buying someone else's design, the curriculum follows the vendor's sequence, and ongoing licensing or refresh purchases can tie the lab's future to a continuing commercial relationship. Details of what any particular vendor bundles and charges vary, so the only reliable comparison is a current quote against a current self-build budget.
What a school makerspace is
A makerspace is a model, not a product. The school picks the room, chooses the equipment piece by piece, and builds or adapts its own programming. Nonprofits exist specifically to support this route: Maker Ed focuses on maker education practice and teacher development, and the Nation of Makers resource library collects operational material on funding, programming, and running a space. The cost structure inverts, too: instead of one large package price, spending is incremental, but so is the labor. Someone on staff has to choose equipment, write policies, plan lessons, and maintain machines — and that person's time is the real price of the DIY route.
How to choose
A few honest questions separate the two models faster than any feature list:
- Do you have a champion? A makerspace without an invested teacher or librarian tends to become a storage room. A turnkey program is designed to survive staff turnover; a DIY space often isn't.
- Is the curriculum the point, or the space? If you need lessons mapped to standards on day one, packaged programs earn their price. If you want open-ended student projects, a makerspace's flexibility is the feature.
- One-time capital or recurring budget? Grants often cover one-time equipment purchases more readily than recurring licenses. Match the model to the money you can actually get.

Many schools land in the middle: buying a structured starter program for younger grades while running an open makerspace for older students, or starting turnkey and adding self-chosen equipment as staff confidence grows.
