What Is Fab Academy and How Does the Program Work?

If you spend any time around fab labs, you'll hear about Fab Academy — the diploma program that runs across the fab lab network itself. It's worth understanding even if you never enroll, because it explains a lot about why fab labs look and behave the way they do.

The idea: a distributed campus

Fab Academy grew out of "How to Make (Almost) Anything," the famous digital-fabrication course at MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms — the same program that originated the fab lab concept. Rather than admitting a small class to one campus, Fab Academy turns participating fab labs around the world into classroom nodes. Students attend global lectures together online, then do the hands-on work in their local lab, guided by local instructors. The campus is the network.

This only works because fab labs standardize their equipment. When an assignment says to mill a circuit board or machine something big, every student on every continent has access to comparable machines — the shared inventory we describe in what equipment a fab lab has. How the program is structured

The course moves through the landscape of digital fabrication topic by topic — computer-controlled cutting, electronics design and production, 3D printing and scanning, molding and casting, machine building, programming — with hands-on assignments along the way, and it culminates in a final project that integrates the skills into one working thing of the student's own design.

Two features of the culture are worth knowing:

  • Documentation is mandatory. Students publicly document their work — what they tried, what failed, how they fixed it — on personal project sites.   • Evaluation is by demonstration. Progress is shown by making things that work and documenting them, reviewed through the network, rather than by sitting exams.

Cost and logistics

Fab Academy is a serious commitment of time and money, not a casual online course. Tuition and fees vary by the local lab hosting you, as do schedules and language of local instruction, so current details need to come from the official Fab Academy site and from the lab you'd attend. Who it's for — and who it isn't

The program suits people who want broad, fast exposure across the whole digital-fabrication toolchain: prospective lab founders and instructors, product designers and engineers adding rapid-prototyping depth, and educators building maker programs.
